The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features.

The Pentax K10D is certainly a feature-packed DSLR and one which offers a lot of bang for the buck at current online prices. You get 10 Megapixel resolution, built-in Shake and Dust Reduction, environmental sealing, two unique exposure modes and a wealth of RAW options which put other mid-range cameras to shame. Indeed in some respects these features elevate the K10D beyond mid-range DSLRs to compete against semi-pro models, and that’s impressive considering the price point.

So while the F30 may not be the slimmest or sexiest compact, nor offer anything as glamorous as a touch-sensitive or flip-out screen, it does deliver great-looking photos under the kind of conditions most rivals would struggle. Its low light capabilities still lead the market whether you’re shooting with or without the flash, and there’s sufficient quality and creative control to keep most enthusiasts happy. So once again it’s a case of evolution with the new PowerShots delivering higher resolutions, faster ISOs and bigger screens than their predecessors. The previous models may have been ideal for beginners wanting to grow or enthusiasts wishing to compliment a DSLR, but the big question as always is whether the increased resolution really offers any benefit or worse, comes at the cost of compromised noise levels?
